Books for Boys

Recently, my little brother and I have been discussing how the YA genre in general seems to be aimed more so at female readers. Of course, there are several reasons why that this is so but it has really got me thinking about compiling a list of YA books that boys would enjoy. Not only would this be fantastic for any male readers but I know my brother would appreciate it as well!

This is the list I've compiled so far:

-Cirque Du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan (vol 1-12) by Darren Shan
-Demonata (vol 1-10) by Darren Shan
-The Saga of Larten Crepsley by Darren Shan
-Pendragon (vol 1-10) by DJ MacHale
-Morpheus Road by DJ MacHale
-The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
-Harry Potter (vol 1-7) by JK Rowling
-The Chronicles of Vladamir Todd by Heather Brewer
-Thirteen Days to Midnight by Patrick Carman
-Night Runner by Max Turner
-Candor by Pam Bachorz
-Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
-Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey
-Gone by Michael Grant
-The Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner
-The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
The books listed here are what I recommend to male readers (who are not necessarily interested in romance or super romantic story lines) and most of them I have read myself and loved (though I'm a girl, I LOVE these kinds of books). I hate to categorize books and says boys read these, girls read these... ect. But the truth is my little brother would never read a book like Twilight or Wicked Lovely. These are the books that I personally would recommend to him (and have-- he has read and loved most of the books on this list!) and feel are slightly aimed more towards males or both genders.

I would LOVE to add on to it! It would be fantastic if everyone would share their own suggestions by commenting on this post (or even emailing me!).

  1. Nice list! I would add The Cherub series by Robert Muchamore and Spy High series by A.J. to it. Both are excellent reads. I'm sure I could come up with some more, but I ahve completely drawn a blank.

  2. I would add the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz which are aimed at boys but which I really enjoy and I'm a girl.

The Diamond Brothers by Anthony Horowitz is so funny, I love the two main characters.

The Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz.

The Enemy by Charlie Higson, The Dead by Charlie Higson.

Leviathan + Behemoth + Goliath by Scott Westerfeld.

The Larklight books by Philip Reeve and The Mortal Engines perhaps.

    Books by Rick Riordan.

    Young Sherlock Holmes.

    Young Bond.

The H.I.V.E series by Mark Walden.

    Books by James Patterson.

    Books by Justin Somper.

    Changeling by Steve Feasey.

All on my list of read or to-read.

The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Night Runner by Max Turner (a bit of romance)

The Keys to the Kingdom Series by Garth Nix

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (thought probably not a trilogy anymore since the 4th book came out last year :P)

    Buried Fire by Jonathan Stroud

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

Reckless by Cornelia Funke (a bit of romance)

    Enjoy :)

  8. I think The Kite Runner is a book boys should read, and also the Tomorrow When the War began Series. There are seven in the set and they are all page-turners! xx

  9. The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
I Am Number Four, by Pittacus Lore
    Blood Ninja, by Nick Lake
Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card
The Maximum Ride series, by James Patterson
The Hunger Games series, by Suzanne Collins
The Mortal Instrument series, by Cassandra Clare
    Bloodthirsty, by Flynn Meany
    Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen

As a woman I certainly liked all of these books as well and I highly recommend them for anyone, but they're definitely appealing to boys specifically with either male POVs, adventure, action or survival.
