Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr

Rating: 4.75

Re-Read? Definitely re-readable!

Recommend? I recommend the Wicked Lovely series to older teens who love the paranormal. Especially those who love the fey!

Release Date: February 22, 2011
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 336
Synopsis:

The Summer King is missing; the Dark Court is bleeding; and a stranger walks the streets of Huntsdale, his presence signifying the deaths of powerful fey.Aislinn tends to the Summer Court, searching for her absent king and yearning for Seth. Torn between his new queen and his old love, Keenan works from afar to strengthen his court against the coming war. Donia longs for fiery passion even as she coolly readies the Winter Court for battle. And Seth, sworn brother of the Dark King and heir to the High Queen, is about to make a mistake that could cost his life.

Love, despair, and betrayal ignite the Faery Courts, and in the final conflict, some will win . . . and some will lose everything.
The thrilling conclusion to Melissa Marr's New York Times bestselling Wicked Lovely series will leave readers breathless.

My Thoughts:

First off, I have to say I deeply enjoyed Darkest Mercy. It had to be one of my favorite installments in the whole series. It had a very satisfying ending that I'm sure left most all readers happy in at least some aspects. It was utterly fantastic and I have to say I loved the whole series and I'm sad that it is over. That being said, here is my super-inappropriate-pleasedon'ttakethisserieousbecausei'msureiamtheonlyonewhothinksthis-sad-rant-thatihopedoesn'tcontainspoilersbutjustincasebewarned:

Keenan is my absolute favorite character in this whole series and my biggest disappointment was that I really really DISLIKED the way things ended in almost all aspects concerning him. There was a particular point in the book where I just had to come to terms with certain changes in events, but really-- they just kept piling up when it came to my dear Keenan. I felt that instead of being happy for him at the end, I was merely accepting his fate, even though most people would agree that it was a good ending for him (trying to keep this spoiler free is REALLY HARD). If you have read my past reviews on this series, you would understand my stance on who he should really belong with, but alas-- I cannot control their feelings anymore then I can force Melissa Marr to write the ending as I wish it. END-RANT.

Ahem, now that that's out of my system, back to the review (I apologize that this review is so informal-- books that really stir me up bring out this side of me). Darkest Mercy was a really hard book for me to put down-- I would have easily read it in one sitting if not for the fact it was midterm week. It was captivating, emotional, and definitely attention grabbing-- All wrapped up in one of the prettiest dust jackets of the series (and that's saying something). I read a lot of books and I have to say this book (and series) has definitely left an impression on me that goes deep enough to ensure I'll be stalking Melissa Marr's career till the end of forever.

Darkest Mercy was a brilliant end to an altogether fantastic/sexy/unique series.

Read my reviews for the rest of the Wicked Lovely series: Wicked Lovely, Ink Exchange, Fragile Eternity, and Radiant Shadows.

Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr

Rating: 4.0

Re-Read: This is actually the second time I've read this book so I would definitely say this is re-readable!

Recommend: This book was a little more sexy then some other YA books, so I would put an older teen rating on it.

Release Date: April 20, 2010
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 352
Synopsis:

Hunger for nourishment. Hunger for touch. Hunger to belong.

Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers. Those same cravings also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies—including Devlin, the assassin who is brother to the faeries' High Queen. Ani and Devlin are drawn together, but as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?

Alluring romance, heart-stopping danger, and sinister intrigue combine in the penultimate volume of Melissa Marr's New York Times bestselling Wicked Lovely series.

My Thoughts:

Radiant Shadows is the fourth installment in Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series. Unlike books one, three and five, Radiant Shadows does not follow Keenan and Ash's story, but rather a side story. The new POVs, however, are just as essential as our main protagonists and story line. We follow Ani, a half-ling of the hunt and Dark Court and Devlin of the High Court-- Both Reason and Chaos' Brother-son.

Radiant Shadows definitely had a different feel then any of the prior books. It started up kind of slow for me, but then it really picked up pace and there was just a ton of action. It was almost hard to keep up with, with the constant changes in POV. It was also rather confusing at times, but further reading cleared up any confusion. I feel as though the storyline went everywhere and everything you knew about the courts just flew out the window with all the new information. It was definitely jarring.

Radiant Shadows is definitely important to the story line, though I cannot say why without spoilers. Lets just say things will never be the same and the mortal world just became that much more dangerous. I found Devlin's relationship to Rae and Ani interesting-- I'm kind of confused as to what exactly it means for all three of them, but I loved being able to see Niall and Irial's relationship develop. I hope we learn a bit more about it in Darkest Mercy.

Radiant Shadows left me hungry for more and I can't wait to begin Darkest Mercy, Melissa Marr's final installment in the Wicked Lovely series!

Aislinn tends to the Summer Court, searching for her absent king and yearning for Seth. Torn between his new queen and his old love, Keenan works from afar to strengthen his court against the coming war. Donia longs for fiery passion even as she coolly readies the Winter Court for battle. Love, despair, and betrayal ignite the Faery Courts, and in the final conflict, some will win . . . and some will lose everything.

The thrilling conclusion to Melissa Marr's New York Times bestselling Wicked Lovely series will leave readers breathless.

Sacred Scars by Kathleen Duey (hardback)

Synopsis:

Sadima, Franklin, and Somiss, driven out of Limòri by a suspicious fire, are living in a cave hidden within the cliffs that overlook the city. Somiss is convinced the dark passages of the caves were the home of ancient magicians, and his obsession with restoring magic deepens. Sadima dreams of escape -- for her, for Franklin, and for the orphaned street boys Somiss has imprisoned in a crowded cage. Somiss claims he will teach these boys magic, that they will become his first students, but Sadima knows he is lying.

Generations later, Hahp is struggling to survive the wizards' increasingly dangerous classes at the Limòri Academy of Magic. He knows the fragile pact he has forged with his secretive roommate, Gerrard, will not be enough to put an end to the evil. It will take all the students acting together to have any chance of destroying the academy. Building trust, with few chances to speak or plan, will be almost impossible, but there is no choice.

The worlds of Sadima and Hahp move closer together in the second compelling installment of Kathleen Duey's brilliant trilogy, which began with the National Book Award finalist Skin Hunger, praised by Holly Black as "beautifully written, fierce, and unforgettable."

Devlin wants to keep Ani safe from his sisters, knowing that if he fails, he will be the instrument of Ani’s death.

Ani isn’t one to be guarded while others fight battles for her, though. She has the courage to protect herself and the ability to alter Devlin’s plans—and his life. The two are drawn together, each with reason to fear the other and to fear for one another. But as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Re-Read? Yes! This book is definitely worth a few re-reads-- I cannot wait for the next one!

Recommend? Again, I recommend this series to really anyone who has an interest in fantasy or faerie related topics. There really wasn't much sexual content except for in conversation.

Publisher: Harper Teen/ 389 pages

Synopsis:

Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone—but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he'd ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen. Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who'd always terrified her—but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she'd ever imagined. In Melissa Marr's third mesmerizing tale of Faerie, Seth and Aislinn struggle to stay true to themselves and each other in a milieu of shadowy rules and shifting allegiances, where old friends become new enemies and one wrong move could plunge the Earth into chaos. (Amazon Product Description)

My Thoughts:

Caught up in the faery world, Seth does his best to juggle his brotherhood with Niall, his relationship with Aislinn, and his mortal life. But dating a faery queen isn't easy. How far can love last when it seems everything is against what you really want? Seth wants one simple thing: to be with Aislinn forever. She is his 'it'. His always and forever. But, she will always belong to Keenan in some way-- and Seth can't help but wonder what will happen when he eventually grows old and dies. In desperation to keep Aislinn, he searches for ways to make her his forever.

I really had very few problems with this book. I really didn't appreciate all the negativity towards Keenan. I don't believe the author made it clear enough in previous books that Keenan was such a terrible person. I feel that people look too harshly on him and I actually really like Keenan-- more so then Seth. I think he is not as bad as everyone seems to make him and he just wants what's best for his court and Queen. I don't understand how you can criticize that, especially since that is what he is supposed to be-- The Summer King. Keenan's off and on relationship with Donia bothered me-- It seemed to be over before it really even started. Pointless hurt on Donia's part...

Out of all of the three books, Fragile Eternity is my favorite. The plot was increasingly interesting and the characters were relateable. Can we say love triangle any louder? I really do love Melissa Marr's faery court system. While Donia is my favorite character, the Summer Court is my favorite court. The POV changes constantly throughout the novel, but it flows very fluidly and there was never any confusion on who was narrating. In the beginning there were a few slower parts, but as soon as you passed them, the book really took off.

If you enjoyed Wicked Lovely, I am sure you will be entranced by Melissa Marr's newest edition to the series. Fragile Eternity left me wanting more and more of Melissa Marr's beautifully crafted world where all things Fae are possible.

Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

Rating: 3.8/5.0

Re-Read? Maybe, but only in order to remember details for Fragile Eternity.

Recommend? I definitely recommend this series, but not this book in general. Contains sexual context including rape, drugs, alcohol and some cussing. 15 and up, perhaps. A mature reader.

Publisher: Harper Teen/325 pages

Synopsis:

Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.

Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.

The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

My Thoughts:

Darker then its predecessor, Wicked Lovely, Ink Exchange is the dark tale that follows Aislinn's friend, Leslie, who we had met in the previous novel. Leslie figures her life can not get any worse. Her Dad pretty much abandoned her and her brother in favor of alcohol. Her brother is a druggie. She has to live with all of the above and her brother let 'them' have her that time... and she just wants the pain to go away. She's lying to her friends and not asking for help, though she needs it. Leslie believes she needs to reclaim herself in order to feel better. What better way then a Tattoo to symbolize the change she wants? But not just any tattoo... a special one that calls out to her: Two beautiful eyes surrounded by celtic knots...

Ink Exchange
, in my opinion, was not up to game with Wicked Lovely. It was a necessary read if you plan to read the series, but I felt like I just wanted to get through it, rather then enjoy it. It was repetitive and I believe it really went no where besides explaining the Dark Court more thoroughly. The beginning and middle were both very interesting, but I felt the end was rushed and dragged on at the same time. It also got very confusing towards the end when Leslie went in and out of consciousness and I believe the fix for all the problems came too easily.

Ink Exchange basically contained all the information you need to understand Fragile Eternity. I enjoyed learning more thoroughly all the details about the different courts and their rulers and I also learned about the different natures of certain characters. I really didn't come away with much from this book lesson wise except don't get addicted to anything and stay away from drugs. Also, be careful who you put your trust in-- you never know when it is going to stab you in the back. In the ends, it came out to be an OK book, both un-memorable and worth reading at the same time.

Not so many this week, but I'm still excited to start reading! Ever since I read Wicked Lovely, I've been captivated by Melissa Marr's world. :) In My MailBox is brought to us by: The Story Siren.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Re-Read? Definitely. Especially right before I read anymore of the series.

Recommend? I recommend this to anyone who has a taste for anything to do with the fey, teenage coming to terms stories, and an entertaining read. I do want to suggest an age recommendation though. I would say 15 and up because it contains sexual and drug and alcohol references.

Synopsis:

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.

Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.

Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.

But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st century faery tale.

My Thoughts:

There is always a choice. But what if none of your options bring you where you want to be? What do you choose then? Aislinn is a pretty normal girl, well besides the fact that she can see faeries. She has her own life, friends, and a best friend that is a potential could be boyfriend. Besides the wicked faeries she has no choice but to see, her life isn't that bad. That is, until one of them starts following her. Aislinn's rules can no longer help her and she begins to wonder if there is anything that can?

Wicked Lovely goes through the POV of both Aislinn, the Summer King Keenan and the Winter Girl. It really is great knowing what is also going on with Keenan, Aislinn's pursuer. Keenan is not really a bad guy. He doesn't want to take Aislinn's life away from her but the other choice is a grim one. What if Aislinn was actually the one? You learn that Keenan also has a love of his own, and no matter how he tries, he can never repent for what he's done to her. It is really sad actually. I loved both love stories that are winded together in this one book.

Wicked Lovely had me not able to put it down! The characters were so real. I felt I really got to know them throughout the book. That is an important aspect for me in novels, especially a series. A problem for me with this novel was sometimes the pace would pick up and it would kind of blur what was happening. I would be reading a page and all of a sudden something would happen, and I would have no idea where it came from. These were very far apart and very small, but it was something that bothered me.

Faerie stories like this always surprise me. I go in expecting one thing, and get another. It was a very pleasant surprise in this case. I absolutely loved the world Marr crafted for her Faeries. It was a unique hierarchy and I enjoyed figuring out all the aspects of the plot. Again, I took away that the books main lesson is finding ones true self. Before, Aislinn was just living day by day, always on the look out for the faeries no one but her (and her Grams) could see. In the end, she finds a purpose. Also, never underestimate love. It could surpise you. Wicked Lovely was a great start to the series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next two books. All and all, a phenomenal page turning read.

Teaser Tuesday -1

This weeks Teaser Tuesday is an excerpt from Wicked Lovely (my current read!) by Melissa Marr. This is my first time participating with Teaser Tuesday, but it sounded like fun so here goes!

My Teaser:

"He tilted her head up and whispered, "Dance with me." She shook her head, something very close to fear in her eyes. "There's no room, no music." Pg 173 by Melissa Marr

Hope I didn't include any spoilers! I have yet to get to that part in the story.

In My MailBox -1

So this is my first time doing the In My Mailbox meme! Today I had just received a few books from the book store. I hope to read them by next week and have a few new reviews!

-Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner

Summery:

The war between humanity and Faerie devastated both sides. Or so 15-year-old Liza has been told. Nothing has been seen or heard from Faerie since, and Liza’s world bears the scars of its encounter with magic. Trees move with sinister intention, and the town Liza calls home is surrounded by a forest that threatens to harm all those who wander into it. Then Liza discovers she has the Faerie ability to see—into the past, into the future—and she has no choice but to flee her town. Liza’s quest will take her into Faerie and back again, and what she finds along the way may be the key to healing both worlds.

Janni Lee Simner’s first novel for young adults is a dark fairy-tale twist on apocalyptic fiction—as familiar as a nightmare, yet altogether unique.

-Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Summery:

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.

-Wings by Aprilynne Pike:

Summery:

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.
